The Office – Episode 5×25 – Cafe Disco

“Cafe Disco,” the twenty-fifth episode of season 5 of NBC’s television show The Office, first aired on Thursday, May 7, 2009.

Plot Synopsis

Michael re-purposes his old office space into a cafe-disco lounge for the Dunder Miffin staff. Pam and Jim plan a secret trip to elope. Phyllis is taken aback by Bob’s new secretary.

Initial Reaction

I don’t know where to start with this episode.  The only thing I could think while watching it was, “what the hell is going on?”  Phyllis and Dwight were acting out of character, Jim and Pam’s story went nowhere, and the rest of the episode was just an excuse for a dance party.  It was a mess, and the strangest episode since the over-the-top Superbowl episode named “Stress Relief.”  All that being said, it was pretty entertaining to see everyone in the office dancing and having fun.  It really just seemed like a filler show, and the writers were like, “Hey we have another week before the finale… um… DANCE PARTY!”

In-Depth Discussion

The cold open was GOLD.  Dwight got Pam good with that one.  How much would that suck if the new hot receptionist also was able to outshine her artistic abilities?  Speaking of the new receptionist, I think I like her.  She doesn’t seem to be very intelligent, but she is enthusiastic about everything.  This has huge potential for comedy as she will probably just go along with whatever ideas Michael has.

Jim and Pam decide to get married by eloping to Ohio in an attempt to get tons of viewers to watch… I mean… in order to profess their love to one another.  Only they didn’t go through with it, most likely pissing off tons of teenage girls across the nation.

Dwight and Phyllis lose their damned minds this week, partaking in back massages and carrots and… I just don’t know what to say about all of this.  I’ll move on…

DANCE PARTY.  OK that pretty much sums up the rest of the episode.  The dance-off between Andy and Kelly was the best part.  It was nice to see Michael so happy while looking around to see his friends having a good time.

Stanley made the best decision of all, to sleep through the insanity.

Casual Observations

  • I love how Creed always just calls Michael “boss,” even in the time period when he no longer worked at Dunder Mifflin.  As a side note, Creed was totally eating chicken in the bathroom.
  • “I… was just learning… to… love…”
  • The whole “daddy” thing went on for waaaay to long, but it was funny.  My favorite part was when Andy said, “Wittle Andy is afwaid.”
